Habsburg Madrid & Royal Palace
Day one begins at the immense Palacio Real, Western Europe's largest royal palace, leads through the historic Mercado de San Miguel market hall to the arcaded Plaza Mayor and the ever-busy Puerta del Sol, Spain's kilometre zero. Along the grand Gran Vía with its cinema palaces to Plaza de España and the ancient Egyptian Templo de Debod, one of the city's best sunset spots.
Art Triangle & Retiro
Day two is devoted to the Paseo del Arte: the Museo Reina Sofía with Picasso's Guernica, the literary Barrio de las Letras for a breather, and the world-famous Prado with Velázquez and Goya. On to the Neoclassical triumphal arch Puerta de Alcalá and into the city's green lung, the Parque del Retiro with its boating lake and glass Crystal Palace.
